The Merchant

The Merchant serves as one of the core ingredients to the survival of any community. As a person engaged in retail business for their livelihood, the merchant is the owner, manager, buyer, seller, creative mastermind, problem solver and janitor inclusive. Merchants ply their trade, providing products and services to their community. This individual often starts and finishes their day with a broom in hand.

The Merchant, painted by artist Stan Otto in celebration

of United Cycles 75th Anniversary, portrays Reg Brooks, United Cycles second generation Brooks family owner. This mural is dedicated to all business people in Old Strathcona and Edmonton who have stood the test of time and paved the way for retail innovation in Canada. This gives proof that the creed that it the merchant takes care of their customers and community, the customers and community with continue to take care of the merchant.
