On the cutting edge: our guide to bike helmet technology
Published on  Updated on

Just as synonymous with the bike itself is the bike helmet. It’s an extremely important piece of protection for any rider. That means it’s in your best interest to find a helmet that both fits you properly and will last for a long time.

Thankfully, we’ve got you covered on that front. United has an extensive collection of helmets for every type of rider, and they often feature some of the latest technology to help keep you safe as a rider.

There’s a lot you might not know about helmet technology. Lucky for you, there’s been a ton of advancements to help keep your head safe!

 Tech: What you get:
Wavecel Collapsible cellular structure in the foam layer that adds extra protection against angled impacts
MIPS Low friction layer between the head and helmet that guards against violent rotational motion
ANGi Sensor that detects potential head impacts associated with a crash and alerts your emergency contacts if you’re unresponsive

Wavecel

This technology is exclusive to Bontrager bike helmets, and adds extra protection to the helmet’s foam layer. It acts as a collapsible cellular structure inside the helmet that helps protect your head from different angled impacts that might happen in a crash. In the event of an accident, the cells first flex to reduce initial impact, then crumple, and finally glide in order to redistribute energy away from your head.

MIPS

A technology that’s been developed for over 25 years, MIPS is recognized as one of the pioneers in the bike helmet industry. Their technology mimics your brain’s own protection system and guards against rotational motion that can cause serious injuries in a crash. By incorporating a low friction layer between the head and helmet, MIPS can help keep you safe in the event of a collision or crash.

ANGi:

Developed by Specialized, the ANGi system is a cutting edge technology that allows your helmet to give real time updates in the event of a potentially dangerous crash. The specialized sensor detects movements and forces that are consistent with head impact and sends an alert to your phone if it suspects you’ve been in an accident. If you can’t respond to the alert, it automatically alerts your emergency contacts that you’ve been in an accident and makes them aware of your location.
